Fought in the heavily contested and unstable Trans-Mississippi Campaign this series of battles was contested in a pivotal cross-section of states, namely Missouri and Arkansas. These states were in integral for the control of the Western Confederate territories and General Grant's inevitable victory at the Battle of Vicksburg. Missouri and Arkansas technically represented the edge of the Union and encompassed a diverse mix of successionists, unionists, Native Americans, and slaves. However, the effects were rather important. One of them was the tremendous number of deaths of Confederate military leaders. Four Confederate colonels were captured, wounded, or killed. Setting the stage with the events leading to the bloody siege, this book has everything of interest to the even the casual military historian: maps, illustrations and analysis. In addition to the what's what and who's who involved in the conflict, there is also the ordure of battle, which gives better insight to the units, formations, and equipment of the combatants. Heralded as one of the key turning points of the war, it was the first major conflict where Native Americans actively participated. On both sides. And it also paints the heartbreaking suffering of the civilians on the wrong side of the siege. It's just the right length for an evening's reading, and definitely a must-have for your military history library. Looking forward to the next book in the Civil War Battles series! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from David Basile -- Civil War buff or not, this is a very interesting story and battle. : While I have a very broad set of interests when it comes to reading, it turns out that specific battles hasn't really been one of them. Until now. I'd heard about many of the famous battles and visited some battlefields from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, but hadn't spent much time in the details. Turns out that focusing on one battle in a specific geography can be very interesting and this Battle of Pea Ridge was very interesting. I have to admit that reading on a kindle was a challenge without the maps in front of me. I've travelled through much of the areas described and that added to the interest, but on its own this is a well detailed story and one that you should know since it was a pivotal battle. I highly recommend reading this book, and if possible, print out the maps so that you can follow the play by play. Enjoy! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2021 )

Some of the interesting information that is mentioned in this book include the following information: Missouri was the Southernmost state that remained part of the Union for most of the Civil War. The Rebels wanted to snatch it away. After the Union's success at Pea Ridge, Missouri was the Union's. The Battle Of Pea Ridge is considered one of the key turning points of the Civil War.
